Over 400 killed in tribal clashes in Sudan’s Darfur

The fact-finding committee into the incidents between the Turjum and Rizayqat Abbala tribes [in Darfur] has said that, until the cessation of hostilities announced on 8 August, 471 people from the Turjum tribe were killed.
The committee said that although it had not been able to verify the exact number of people killed on the Rizayqat Abbala side [who do not file cases], the number registered in Um Za’ifa reconciliation files on 17 February was 47 people.
The committee’s chairman and secretary of the Darfur peace and reconciliation commission for the Transitional Darfur Regional Authority [TDRA], Mubarak Hamid, said the committee had concluded its mission over a three week period.
He said the committee had become acquainted with the reality of the situation from all sides through the two tribes, the security authorities in the state in addition to the native administrations.
During a press conference held yesterday at the TDRA HQ Hamid reaffirmed that the committee had felt the desire of both parties to meet and agree reconciliation.
He further attributed the fierce fighting between the two tribes to competition over scarce resources, weak development, ignorance and drought and desertification which have hit wide areas belonging to the Rizayqat Abbala in northern Darfur. [Passage omitted]

Reconciliation conference to reportedly open for 32 tribes in Sudan’s Darfur

One of the biggest tribal reconciliation conferences for peace will open next week in Northern Darfur State, in the border area between the state and Southern Darfur State, in addition to Al-Malam area [as published] in Shu’ayriyah locality.
A local administration leader Harun Bashir said more than 32 tribes will participate in the conference.
He said the conference will be attended by the local administration of the state, [ex-rebels] Sudan Liberation, Minawi’s faction, UN and the AU.
Harun said this year will be a year for reconciliation so as to realize peace, development and stability of [the situation] of the people in Darfur states.
