Eritreans fleeing to Ethiopia, high on record

October 11, 2007 (AXUM, Ethiopia) — The number of Eritrean’s who flee to Ethiopia reached a new record, North Ethiopia security administration bureau disclosed.

“The number of the people who fled Eritrea to Ethiopia for political motivations has reached at least 5,000 Eritreans this year; the zonal chief of security, Abadi weldesenbet told Sudan Tribune.

“This number refers only to those who are formally registered in the refugees camps and doesn’t include to those thousands of Eritreans who are in their own in different towns of Ethiopian” Abadi added.

He said over the past 3 months, through only 3 fronts of Tigray region over 2,000 Eritrean’s have arrived Ethiopia.

“A third of the total Eritrea’s who flied to Ethiopian are soldiers of the regime who receive threats, once imprisoned in secret detention centers, tortured on suspetion of Anti-gov’t activities or who fail to perform direct orders ”Abadi added.

According to the bureau each day an average of 30 Eritreans enter Ethiopia through the borders of Tigray lying by Eritrea.

A total of 20.000 Eritreans, who fled Eritrea over the part few years are
now in shimelwa refugee camp in Tigray region.
