Ruling party and regime establishment would play an important role during the transitional government: Taha

KHARTOUM, Feb 06, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — The Sudanese vice-president Ali Osman Mohamed Taha has said that the ruling National Congress (NC) and the National Salvation Revolution establishment would have a particular weight in setting up a transitional government.

Taha indicated that the transitional period following the signing of a final peace agreement will require the cooperation of neighbouring countries so as to ensure Sudan’s unity.

During an interview held with the Saudi newspaper Ukaz and published by Sudanese newspaper Al Sahafa, Taha said the starting point in the government plan to resolve the peace issue in southern Sudan, was based on safeguards for the country’s unity and the decentralization of the government administration.

He added that Sudan’s unity was not going to be achieved merely by efforts of the Sudanese people. “Our Arab, African and Muslim sister countries – he said – should cooperate with us in strengthening and ensuring the country’ unity”.
He explained that the transitional period would be full of dangers and changes. However, he thought Sudan would be able to confront these dangers.

He rejected the description of the government as totalitarian and said the present government was chosen through free elections, monitored by observers from the Arab League, the African Union and a number of organizations
