The Egyptian-Sudanese Joint Technical Committee on the River Nile discussed the preparations of the two countries for possible future flooding.

The committee discussed the condition of the system for early warning, which is currently being set up by Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia, committee President Salaheldin Yusuf said.

The talks, which started some days ago, go on in an atmosphere of mutual understanding, he added. The sides agreed that the committee should be given more resources and specialists if it is to carry out its tasks.

They also discussed the setting up of more monitoring stations and upgrading the existing ones.

In September 2007, exceptionally heavy rainfalls led to severe flooding in the Ethiopean plateau. It caused heavy damage to the infrastructure and houses in Ethiopia and downstream in Sudan. The Egyptian government was among the first to send help to its southern neighbours, Yusuf said.
