Tanzania takes African Union rotating chair

January 31, 2008 (ADDIS ABABA) — Tanzania was elected by the African Union Thursday to take over the continental body’s rotating presidency, outgoing chairman Ghanaian President John Kufuor announced.

“I invite our new chairman Mr (Jakaya) Kikwete,” Kufuor told delegates after the vote, which took place on the first day of the African Union heads of state meeting in Addis Ababa.

Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, 58, was chosen by the 53-state body, in a result that had been widely anticipated as the rotating presidency had to be taken by an east African nation this year.

Sudan’s candidacy was rejected last year over member states’ objections to the Khartoum regime’s handling of the crisis in the war-torn western region of Darfur.

A fresh bid by Khartoum was nipped in the bud again this year when the east African grouping on Wednesday ruled out Sudan as its candidate.

Please take care of this official seat for it is a rotational one and you should to do something that will bring warring countries together.

    Best of luck!
