South Sudan’s President hails bilateral relations with Israel

June 15, 2022 (JUBA) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir on Wednesday held discussions with the Israeli ambassador to the country, Gershon Kedar during which he hailed the strong bilateral relations between the two countries.

Kiir, the presidency said in a statement, highlighted the support people and several political organizations received prior to South Sudan’s secession.

The East African country seceded from neighbouring Sudan in July, 2011.

For his part, the Israel envoy briefed the South Sudanese leader on the progress of South Sudanese students undergoing agricultural training in Israel.

He also briefed President Kiir on establishment of emergency wards in Juba Teaching Hospital and investments by Israeli companies in South Sudan.

Israel, its ambassador disclosed, is engaged on projects aimed at improving food security, saving lives and enhancing development in both countries.

Kedar further assured the South Sudanese leader that Israel was ready to cooperate with young nation in the energy, agriculture and other sectors.

South Sudan’s ambassador to Israel, Wol Mayar Ariec, stressed his country’s commitment towards enhancing political and diplomatic dialogue between the two countries based on common interests and respect for mutual sensitivities.

Relations between the two countries date back to the pre-recession era.  Israel recognized South Sudan on 10 July 2011, a day after its independence. On 15 July, South Sudan announced intentions to have full diplomatic relations with Israel. On 28 July, Israel said it had established full diplomatic ties with South Sudan.
