March 2, 2008 (BOR, Jonglei) — Business community in Jonglei have started shops construction in Bor town newly surveyed market. It is a break through for Jonglei traders blame for spending money on cattle than building permanent shops.
Maror, the main market in Bor town and well surveyed by the ministry of Physical infrastructure, had it work began last week after the business community settled their minimum requirements with the ministry to obtain a shop plot.
The businessmen have a reason to brag. “I started this business as a mobile trader selling cattle, but now, my shop will not be distinguish from others,” Geu, one of the traders building permanent shops pronounced proudly today Sunday March 2 when contacted.
Jonglei traders, usually blame by government, individuals and other well wishers are back on the truck. “When we see such buildings, in the name of the businessmen, one feels very proud,” James Gak, a resident of Bor town told Sudan Tribune adding that “it’s time government loosen or review her taxing policies.”
Jonglei, a state where more than 90% or so, of the communities are cattle keepers, the businessmen are accused of investing in cattle, commodities seen as too traditional and less cert by their counterparts in other states of Southern Sudan.
This criticism became true when thousands of cattle were lost to cattle raiders last years. “Investing in permanent shops is inevitable,” Mading, a trader asserted adding that “unlike cattle, no one will raid or steal it.”
More than twenty permanent shops are half way completed though the work started last week. More than one hundred others are being constructed using iron sheets, a move seen unacceptable. “It’s multiplying one by one,” a resident who prefers anonymity told Sudan Tribune. But if you dream of climbing a mountain tomorrow, start by lifting small stone today. Manyok, who is constructing his shop using iron sheets, said he is dogged to build a permanent shop in a near future.
Other proposed markets are Lang-bar and Laudier among others. It’s unclear whether traders of these market will catch up with their colleagues. Most shops, restaurants place, bus parks and roadside sellers operate business in untidy places, an occurrence analysts say it’s being money minded. Should the same move be taken by the restaurants owners, a true Bor town will be visible.

Let me remind all of you that business is what is going to develop jonglei or lets say bor im saying this because bor people are open-minded know what they want to do and have good heart. So when some one comes up with idea of building market then let’s give him support that he needs and let’s not forget what nuer did to bor people. My mother always told me about the horrible stories about what happen. What happen needs to be revenge in economic and education that’s will kill nuer people so my people lets focus on how bor will be develop that’s all am saying.
