Burhan’s travel to New York opens new page with international community
September 21, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – Al-Burhan’s participation in the meetings of the UN General Assembly opens a new page in Sudan’s relations with the West and especially the United States, his media adviser said on Wednesday.
The head of the Sovereign Council travelled to New York on Wednesday to take part in the 77th session of the General Assembly despite, the decision of the international community to stop political and economic support to Sudan after his coup against the civilian government in October 2021.
His participation in the funeral of Queen Elizabeth and the UN annual meeting indicates his desire to extend a reconciling hand to the world leaders and call to trust his efforts to bring stability to Sudan and cooperate with the international leaders.
After al-Burhan arrival in New York his media adviser Tahir Abu Haja told the official news agency, SUNA, that the participation of the head of the Sovereign Council in the meetings of the UN General Assembly “turns a page in our relations with the West and the United States in particular”.
Abu Haja added that a new chapter in Sudan’s external relations will begin based on mutual respect, common interests and accurate information.
Under al-Burhan’s leadership, “We are the keenest on real civil transition and the keenest to achieve real civilian transition, (national) unity and external relations that benefit to the cohesion of political and military forces in order to achieve national consensus,” he stressed.
After the collapse of the former regime, al-Burhan said that the military should oversee the transition in Sudan. But the civilian rejected this guardianship, saying he want to preserve the economic advantages of the military elite in Sudan at the expense of the people.
After his rift with the coalition of the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) al-Burhan rules the country with the political support of some Darfur armed groups and the elements of the former regime who are reinstated in the civil service after the coup.
The acting leader of the National Umma Party Fadlalla Burma who is also a retired general stated recently that al-Burhan told him last August he would only hand over power to an elected government.
