UN Guterres voices concern over Sudan’s protracted political crisis

September 24, 202 (KHARTOUM) – Antonio Guterres UN Secretary-General voiced serious concern about the protracted political stalemate in Sudan, during a meeting with General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan Chairperson of the Sovereign Council.

The official news agency SUNA said the head of the Sovereign Council, in a meeting held on September 23, briefed the UN chief about the political developments in the country and the army’s decision to withdraw from the political process to form a civilian government.

“The Secretary-General expressed serious concern about the continuing political crisis in Sudan, as well as the rapidly deteriorating security, economic and humanitarian situations,” said the UN spokesman on Saturday.

Guterres further stressed the “urgent need for an inclusive political agreement” to restore the civilian transitional government to achieve the aspiration of the Sudanese people for peace, democracy and prosperity.

For its part, the official news agency said that Guterres reiterated the UN support for Sudanese efforts toward democratic transition and called on the Sudanese political forces to agree on a civilian government.

Al-Burhan did not meet with Western officials during his presence in New York.

In return, he held a meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

According to the Sovereign Council, al-Burhan expressed his appreciation for Russia’s positions in support of it in the Security Council.

Also, he reiterated the “continuation of joint cooperation between Khartoum and Moscow in the various fields”.
