SPLM Jonglei state congress starts, leaders go unopposed

By Philip Thon Aleu

April 29, 2008 (BOR, Jonglei) – The two day South Sudan’s ruling party Jonglei State congress, that kicked-off Tuesday April 29 at Diam-Diam hotel – Bor Town, made an overwhelming support to incumbent leaders in a move members describe as “bonding the party.”

Jonglei_Governor.jpgJonglei Governor Gen. Kuol Manyang Juuk retained state chairmanship for the Sudan’s People Liberation Movement (SPLM) and Deputy Governor Hussein Maar Nyuot for deputy chairmanship in the same manner. But position of the SPLM state secretariat’s election is adjourned for Wednesday as time run out of hand Tuesday evening. Analysts say current state secretary Antipas Nyok stands high chances of winning but warned of anything.

Over 600 SPLM members turned up for the congress that brought Jonglei citizens together for the first time in twenty-five year old history of the party (SPLM). SPLM Jonglei state representatives from the eleven counties of Panjak, Pibor, Duk, Pachala, Wuror, Twic East, Bor, Akobo, Korfulus, Ayot, Nyirol and (Atar) poured into Bor Town since Saturday to participate in the congress ahead of next month SPLM’s national convection in Juba.

In his position as the chairman, Gen. Kuol Manyang assured his party members of his commitment to successful initiatives. “I will respect the position you have offered to me. I will be cooperative as we always do. I will convince the government to speed up disarmament process for the safety of our people,” Mr. Kuol Manyang noted in his appreciating speech as he assumed his post after a few minutes retirement. Insecurity, he says, will be considered a priority and part of discussion Wednesday April 30.

Members of convection or congress (COC), who came from South Sudan capital Juba, observed the election process. “I declared comrade Kuol Manyang as chairman of the SPLM Jonglei state now that there is no other contestant,” chairperson of COC Jasmine announced Kuol resumption of the position he held since he took over from Philip Thon Leek in December 2007. She says the process was free and fair.

Jonglei is the birth place of the SPLM. State leaders say successful formation of the congress here will be reflected in other states of Southern Sudan.

SPLM and her army the SPLA started the South-North war of liberation on May 1983 in Jonglei capital Bor and majority of people are members by birth. However, recent registration made brought 250,000 members to the three year old party (recognized in 2005 in the CPA), state secretary Antipas Nyok disclosed.

Congratulations to leaders elected and to the Jonglei people for demonstrating their civil rights prior to forthcoming SPLM National Convention due next month . This is what is expected of others to follow before choosing participants to represent them at random. Otherwise, good job jonglei.

Long live the SPLM, long live the SPLA and Long Live the CPA.

Hi Jongkoth(Bor) Bier (Murle) and Lou(Nuer).

As Jongolei member myself, I want to salute your limbing convention with one left hand. I am going to greet everybody of Jongolei in right hand the day you people have understood the importance of peace and when all you become less tribalistic and war engines.

I know some of us need to outsmart others in term of disarmament, meanwhile good number of us prefer uniform disarmament across the state, we don’t buy the disarmament where every leader sneak to his village and ask his brother or cousin to hide his gun or bring it to his house in town to escape collection while the rest are collected. Such kind of conducts are not acceptable. I know some Bor want to hide their guns, disarmed Murle and Nuer before they remove and use their guns against those tribes.

Murle must give their guns and so should be done by Bor, Anyuak and Nuer.

Lastly, I failed many times to understand if Bor was the birthplace for SPLA as some totalitarians are trying to claim, in genuine writen story which I have the copy, the SPLA war was started may 16 in three towns, namely Bor, Ayod and Pibor. Therefore I don’t understand how Bor came to become the birthplace of the SPLA among the three? In may 16, William Nyuon was in Ayod while Karabino was in charge of both Bor and Pibor and that had given them easy move to facilitate their war condination among those three mentioned towns.

Anyway, I am just trying to open the eyes of those who are eager to know SPLA birthplaces.

I hope you put this into your notebooks.

    God bless.

    MY MESSAGE TO THE GOVERNOR
You are highly respected Governor by your people amongst the Governors, to believe that, your re-storation back to Splm chairmanship and current activities you are doing in the state’s capital Bor, have given you hands clap from Jonglei citizens.

Extend your works to counties by building Splm offices,Schools and Hospitals through Commissioners, such that these eating commissioners can be enganged because they do not think for their people.

This is great news for the people of Jonglei and South Sudan. Democracy is not an export from the West, it’s something people do to peacefully settle differences and elect their representatives in government. Its common sense. Good job citizens of Jonglei.

The SPLM state congresses generated some debate on the internet. An elder routinely checking news on the sudantribune came across the heated and insultive exchange that the congress of the Jonglei State brought on the net. The elder has this to advice: You, South Sudanese, I thought that you have become politically mature. Why are you reacting emotionally to Mr. Logic? Do you not read between the lines? Have you forgotten the slogan of ( down, down with the policy of divide and rule)? You are making yourselves lured to be divided on tribal lines by the enemy. Be vigilant. Mr. Logic is sowing the seeds of discord among you. the end.

    For the sudantribune, this message:

Since it came to light, the sudantribune has championed the coverage of the news and provided documents and above has built a connection with the sudanese readers and became trusted.
Use of coarse insultive language should be discouraged and made punishable in line with the internet regulations and laws. Before termination of membership, there is need to be a warning for participant to reform. Otherwise, the sudantribune will find itself one day in court to explain actions it did not comit but the comments it hosted.

I request all to have intellectual discussion and avoid being dragged down into nonsensical talk and insults that do not help any case. Let SPLM to organize itself and other political parties to do the same so that we can have a genuine poliitical system.

    Thon
