UN agencies suspend operations in southern Sudan over insecurity

KHARTOUM, March 01, 2004 (SUNA) — The UN has announced suspension of its humanitarian operations in south Sudan. A statement issued by the UN attributed the reasons of the suspension to that armed militias had targeted its employees at Namnam area, western Upper Nile.

The UN called on the government and Sudan People’s Liberation Movement ([SPLM) to identify those behind the crime and punish them.

Meanwhile, State Minister for Humanitarian Affairs Muhammad Yusuf, attributed the incidents at Namnam area to armed militias due to instability of security at some areas of Wahda state.

He said in a statement to Suna that the government is working to realize security and stability there so that the relief operations can be resumed.
