Sudanese army accuses RSF of destroying strategic bridge in the capital
November 11, 2023 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese army has accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of destroying the Shambat Bridge, a critical link between the cities of Omdurman and Khartoum Bahri cities.
“In response to the advancements made by our forces in the Omdurman axis, the rebel militia resorted to a destructive act early today (Saturday), demolishing the Shambat Bridge,” a statement issued by the Sudanese army reads.
The bridge’s destruction severs a vital supply route for the RSF troops in Khartoum and Eastern Khartoum.
Loud explosions were heard on the left bank in Omdurman between 1:00 AM and 2:00 AM. Eyewitnesses believe the bridge was brought down using explosive devices, as they had never heard detonations of such magnitude before.
The precision of the damages of the bridge further confirms that it resulted from the use of explosive charges.
For its part, the RSF denied any involvement in the bridge’s destruction and instead accused the Sudanese army, claiming that the army believed this act would cripple their forces.
The paramilitary group further asserted that “mouthpieces” of the former regime had been advocating for the destruction of the Shambat Bridge to hinder the movement of their forces from western Sudan to Khartoum.
