Unknown assailants kill 6 civilians in Darfur

August 6, 2008 (NEW YORK) — unknown armed men ambushed a civilian convoy in southern Darfur killing six people and wounded 28 others, The United Nations reported.

The convoy composed of seven vehicles was attacked last Monday by unknown men on camels, suspected to be Janjaweed militia. The attack occurred while they were travelling from Nyala the capital of South Darfur to El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur.

UN experts estimate some 300,000 people have died and 2.5 million driven from their homes. Sudan blames the Western media for exaggerating the conflict and puts the death toll at 10,000.

The joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID), in accordance with the UN resolution 1769 is charged with the protection of civilians, without prejudice to the responsibility of the Government of Sudan.

However, the implementation of this provision is undermined by the lack of means and the small number of troops deployed on the ground. The UNAMID expects to double its 10000 troops by the end of the year.

As it was the case last May when the Sudanese army bombed the village of Umm Sidir in North Darfur, the peacekeeping mission organised an operation to air-lift wounded civilians from the area of the attack.

“UNAMID helicopters evacuated eight of the wounded to a private hospital in El Fasher, with the bulk of the remaining casualties being evacuated to Nyala,” The UN spokesperson said in a statement today.

Further more than 170 Gambian soldiers arrived yesterday to the headquarters of UNAMID in El Fasher, while the remaining personnel from an Egyptian engineering company are expected to arrive on 12 August.

Last week the Security Council extended UNAMID’s mandate by 12 months until the end of July 2009.

    Dear all,
Why do you say unknown attack what do you think to find Jajaweed Militias killing the civilians.
I sure, that is the way they usually kill civilians. If you don’t know that style then I am sorry.

Just after the visit of Mr. president and short while, followed by the defence minister visit with his National security service term, the civilian came under attack in Darfur. what a shame!!!
The world should know that the style of killing in Sudan is very unique, and therefore, people must pay attention for that even the AU who support suspension of the ICC decision. Please think twice and reason why!!
