SPLM-N accuses Sudanese gov’t of sabotaging talks, spreading falsehoods
May 21, 2024 (JUBA) – The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) has accused the Sudanese government of attempting to disguise military operations as humanitarian aid. This accusation follows the suspension of talks regarding a humanitarian aid agreement for the Two Areas (South Kordofan and Blue Nile).
Sudanese Defence Minister Yassin Ibrahim, leading the government’s negotiation team, blamed the SPLM-N for obstructing talks and demanding the inclusion of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
However, SPLM-N spokesperson Gatiqa Amuga Delman refuted these claims, accusing the minister of spreading misinformation.
Delman expressed concerns about the composition of the government delegation, which included military and intelligence officers, suggesting their objectives extended beyond humanitarian aid. The SPLM-N disclosed the government’s proposal to establish an air bridge to deliver supplies directly to Sudanese army divisions in conflict zones, interpreting this as a potential military operation disguised as humanitarian aid.
“The Port Sudan government’s proposal raises questions about their intentions,” stated Delman. “Why reject practical proposals and show a sudden interest in specific regions? The Port Sudan government owes everyone an explanation.”
The SPLM-N proposed alternative solutions, including informal aid delivery, individual agreements with UN agencies overseen by South Sudan, and a comprehensive ceasefire including the RSF.
However, the government rejected these proposals, leading to the suspension of talks by South Sudanese mediators.
The SPLM-N reiterated its commitment to impartial aid delivery throughout Sudan, adhering to international humanitarian law and collaborating with UN agencies.
The group, controlling significant areas in South Kordofan and Blue Nile, urged all warring parties to sign an immediate ceasefire to facilitate aid delivery and ensure the safety and free movement of all Sudanese citizens.
