Vietnam pledges to mobilize global support for Abyei
June 13, 2024 (ABYEI) – Vietnam has pledged to mobilize global support for the cause of Abyei, citing the universal vision for peace and stability within the United Nations charter.
“Vietnam wishes to strengthen cooperation with African nations in the fields of politics, diplomacy, economy, trade, investment, culture and in United Nations peacekeeping operations in Africa,” the Vietnamese deputy Defense minister, Gen. Baham Triong Sam said on Tuesday.
Gen. Baham and the high-level military delegation accompanying him on their official visit to Abyei said Vietnam, which also experienced wars and underwent a difficult economic situation remains committed to the United Nations principles seeking to help other nations improve the lives of poor people, avert hunger, diseases and illiteracy.
The UN principles also encourage respect for each other’s rights and freedoms as well encourage efforts that seek to harmonize the actions of nations to achieve these goals.
Gen. Baham said Vietnam stands ready to make more direct and proactive contributions to the common effort for African integration, prosperity, and peace, which is promoted by the African people themselves and represents a dynamic force in the global arena.
The Vietnamese official thanked and appreciated the Chief Administrator and members of his government for the good reception and cooperation, vowing to work to improve relations between the government and Vietnamese forces working under the umbrella of the UN mission in Abyei (UNISFA) to provide more necessary services to the community.
The Vietnamese delegation purposely visited Abyei to check on the conditions of their forces, their role in the region the challenges, and the relationship of these forces with the Ngok Dinka community, in addition to their work in serving the community in all fields.
Speaking to the press after the meeting on Tuesday, the South Sudan-appointed chief administrator, Chol Deng Alaak described the meeting as cordial and thanked the Vietnamese officials for extending goodwill to the people of Abyei.
He said the Vietnamese defence official cited recent achievements, having established diplomatic ties with 189 of the 193 UN members and trade relations with over 230 economies.
“Vietnam is currently the 4th largest economy in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and 37th in the world. The agricultural sector, as a driving force of the country’s economy, has contributed to ensuring national food security and creating jobs for millions of workers, thus contributing to poverty reduction and social welfare. This is a country with global influence and we are happy that they have pledged their support to the cause of Abyei”, explained Alaak.
According to Abyei Chief Administrator, Vietnam has set up diplomatic ties with 54 out of 55 African countries and is working to establish relations with more.
