Al-Burhan, Bin Zayed hold first talks since war in Sudan
July 19, 2024 (ABU DHABI) – In a significant diplomatic move, the Chairman of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, spoke with United Arab Emirates President Mohamed bin Zayed on Thursday, marking the first conversation between the two leaders since the outbreak of war in Sudan in mid-April 2023.
According to the official Emirates News Agency (WAM), discussions centred on bilateral relations, the situation in Sudan, and potential avenues for resolving the ongoing crisis.
President bin Zayed reaffirmed the “UAE’s keenness to support all solutions and initiatives aimed at halting escalation and ending the crisis in Sudan.” He emphasized Abu Dhabi’s commitment to any efforts that could bring an end to the conflict.
While the Sovereign Council did not release an official statement regarding the call, the UAE’s proactive stance in seeking a peaceful resolution is noteworthy, especially given previous accusations from Sudan that the UAE has been supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The phone call signals a potential shift in the dynamics between the two nations and could pave the way for future diplomatic efforts to address the crisis in Sudan.
