South Sudan President congratulates Obama
November 6, 2008 (JUBA) — Southern Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit sent an envoy Thursday to the United States, carrying a message to President-elect Barack Obama.
Kiir, who leads the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), said that he seeks a partnership with Obama to bring peace to Darfur and implement the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005.
The current US administration helped to broker the 2005 agreement between the northern Arab-led government and the SPLM, which for 22 years had been waging a war across the south and parts of the north.
Gaining the new administration’s support for the CPA is a point of apprehension for SPLM, and Kiir said that he hopes that Obama will be a partner for implementing this peace deal just as the Bush administration was.
The message will be delivered by Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth, the Government of Southern Sudan Head of Mission to Washington, D.C.
Obama, a Democratic senator from Illinois, won a decisive victory in the US election on Tuesday November 4, defeating Republican rival John McCain.
