1.2 million Sudanese have fled to Egypt

October 3, 2024 (CAIRO) – At least 1.2 million Sudanese have fled to Egypt since the start of the conflict in April 2023, according to the latest figure provided by the Government of Egypt.

The new figure provided to the United Nations to refugee agency (UNHCR), also indicates that Egypt is the top country receiving individuals forced to flee due to the current conflict in Sudan

According to authorities in Egypt, the number of Sudanese refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in Egypt reached half a million on 26 September, with 86% of arriving m  after the onset of the conflict in Sudan.

Meanwhile, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, met with Egypt’s Foreign Minister (FM) Badr Abdelatty during the 79th UN General Assembly in New York late last month.The FM praised UNHCR’s support for Egypt’s efforts to care for refugees and asylum seekers, stressing the need to further assist refugees and to ease the strain on Egypt and local communities.

The top UN official noted the worsening crises in neighbouring countries, which have led to a surge in refugee flows, making Egypt the third-largest recipient of asylum applications in 2023.

For his part, the Egyptian Foreign minister reaffirmed his country’s commitment to its international obligations.

The meeting also covered the situation in Sudan, where the FM detailed Egypt’s efforts to aid the Sudanese, push for a ceasefire, and improve humanitarian access.

Last month, the Egyptian FM called for an urgent resolution to the Sudan crisis to end the violence, secure a ceasefire, and protect the country’s resources.

He made this statement during a meeting with Sudanese FM Hussein Awad Ali at the UN General Assembly.

Abdelatty outlined Egypt’s efforts to support Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity through international channels.

He further stressed the need to improve aid delivery via border crossings to ensure essential supplies reach the Sudanese people.
