Egypt rejects RSF leader’s accusations of support for Sudanese army

October 18, 2024 (CAIRO) – Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Friday reiterated his government’s denial of accusations by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that Cairo is providing military support to the Sudanese army.

Abdelatty, in an interview with Al-Qahera News TV, emphasized Egypt’s neutrality in the Sudanese conflict and highlighted Cairo’s efforts to mediate a peaceful resolution.

“The security of Egypt is intertwined with the security of Sudan and vice versa,” Abdelatty said, stressing the deep ties between the two countries. “We reject any exaggerations or lies promoted by any party, Sudanese or non-Sudanese.”

RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemetti, claimed in a video statement on October 9 that Egypt was “training the Sudanese army and supplying it with Chinese K8 aircraft.” The Egyptian Foreign Ministry swiftly denied these allegations.

Abdelatty pointed to Egypt’s hosting of over a million Sudanese refugees as evidence of its commitment to supporting the Sudanese people. He also highlighted Egypt’s role in facilitating talks between Sudanese political and civil representatives in July to end the war and restore democratic rule.

Hemetti’s accusations were followed by threats from some RSF commanders to attack the Aswan High Dam in Egypt. The RSF also banned the export of Sudanese goods and livestock from areas under its control.
