U.S. envoy for Sudan to visit region amid humanitarian crisis

October 30, 2024 (WASHINGTON) – U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello will travel to Kenya, Uganda, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt starting on Wednesday for meetings on the crisis in Sudan, the State Department said.

Perriello will meet with Sudanese civil society leaders, host government officials, and multilateral leaders to discuss humanitarian access, civilian protection, and efforts to end the war, the statement said.

He will also reiterate U.S. support for a transition to civilian governance in Sudan, it added.

The visit comes as Sudan faces a dire humanitarian situation, with 6.5 million people facing starvation and 25 million in need of urgent assistance, Perriello said on X social media platform.

He criticized Sudanese authorities for blocking or delaying 90% of emergency relief supplies at Port Sudan.

“Sudan’s Humanitarian Aid Commission only allowed 10% of humanitarian supplies in Port Sudan to reach the people in desperate need of food and medicine,” he said.

“For those suffering in Kadugli or Khartoum, in Nyala or the north, we should find common ground on how to streamline the flow of emergency food and medicine to every corner of Sudan with the greatest possible speed.”
