From 70 to 150 people killed in South Darfur tribal clashes
December 14, 2008 (EL-FASHER) — Between 70 and 150 people were killed in tribal fighting between Fallata and Habaniya tribes in South Darfur State, the hybrid peacekeeping mission said today.
The Fallata used heavy weapons in their attack where six policemen were among the casualties. The police officers were attempting to stop the attack.Also three of the attackers’ vehicles were destroyed.
Reports say thirty-five members of Fallata tribe died during the fighting. Seven members of the Habaniya are reported to be missing, and 18 injured were taken to Buram hospital.
The village of Wad Hajam was looted and burned and more than 5,000 people were allegedly displaced.
The Habaniya and Fallata, who live nearby each other, have regular dispute over cattle theft and the area’s resources. Both tribes are herders.
Both the Habanyia and Fallata are considered as government-allied tribe who waged attack against Darfur civilians to quell Darfur rebellion.
