Sudan, Ethiopia sign agreement to prevent double taxation

Decemeber 28, 2008 (KHARTOUM) — Ethiopia and Sudan signed on Monday an agreement to prevent double taxation between the two countries on the sidelines of Sanaa Forum meetings.

The state minister at the foreign affairs Ali Karti signed on behalf of the Sudan while the foreign minister Seyoum Mesfin signed for Ethiopia.

Following the signing, Karti told reporters that the bilateral agreement aims at encouraging businessmen and investors because it stops double taxation which exists now and businessmen can conduct business without paying taxes imposed in the other state.

He added that the agreement represented one of the requirements of the Charter of Sana’a Forum for Cooperation, which requires coordination and cooperation in all fields, especially the economic one, indicating that the agreement will ensure easy and flexible economic performance and mutual investment between the two countries.

For his part, the Ethiopian Foreign Minister said that the agreement is an important legal framework which would help to promote economic relations between the two countries. He affirmed that the Sudanese-Ethiopian relations are not limited only to cooperation between the two governments, but also are meant for cooperation between the peoples of the two countries.

He noted that this agreement will help to increase cooperation between businessmen in the two countries in all fields of trade and investment.
