Norway urges Sudan to cooperate with ICC

February 21, 2009 (KHARTOUM) — The Norwegian government called on Sudan to cooperate with the International Criminal Court (ICC) which is investigating war crimes in conflict ridden region of Darfur.

“The situation in Darfur is extremely serious. The Security Council has determined that it constitutes a threat to international peace and security. It is the Security Council that has referred this situation to the Court and that requires that all States cooperate fully with the Court” the Norwegian government said in a statement.

“We expect full cooperation from Sudan. Atrocities committed against the civilian population in Darfur must be brought to an immediate end” the statement read.

The ICC judges are expected to issue an arrest warrant for Sudanese president Omer Hassan Bashir on unspecified number of charges connected to Darfur crimes.

But Sudan has refused to accept the jurisdiction of the court saying it is not a member of the Hague based court.

The pro-government Sudanese Media Center (SMC) website have quoted Norwegian official as saying that the ICC move against Bashir will have negative impact on the peace process in the East African Country.

Norway however said that justice is a core component of any peace arrangements.

“We have consistently supported peace efforts in Sudan and the broader region…..no sustainable peace can be built on a foundation of continued impunity for the most serious crimes”

In 2004 the UNSC formed a UN commission of inquiry to look into Darfur abuses headed by former President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) Italian Antonio Cassese.

The commission concluded that the government did not pursue a policy of genocide in the Darfur region but that Khartoum and government-sponsored Arab militias known as the Janjaweed engaged in “widespread and systematic” abuse that may constitute crimes against humanity.

They further said that Sudanese judiciary is “is unable or unwilling” to prosecute those crimes and thus recommended referring the situation to the ICC.

Norway urges Sudan to cooperate with ICC
Thanks Norwegian government for urging Sudan to cooperates with ICC. I don’t know what is wrong with the government of National unity, taking Bhasir to ICC court doesn’t declare immediate death panalty on him. So why doesn’t Bhasir just accept and go to stand in front of ICC court and interprets all the accusations on him?

Of course, ICC can not declare culprits guilty without listening from the culprits first. It is likely, Bhasir knows he is guilty and that is why he doesn’t want to appear in front of ICC court but that idea can not help.

Please you ICC and others super powers can you leave Omer to stay a good life than always being distrubed of what can’t bear fruit.
When is your arrest warrent being issued?
    My advise to you is that only two option are already in place;
If you want to take him then come tomorrow he is alway in his palace and if not then cancel the process of issuing arrest warrent because everyday there is an article concerning ICC arrest warrent to Sudanese president and action is not taken.
please talk what you will do than forwarding what can not happen……….
I will agree with you the day you will come to pick him in his palace.
Otherwise i have no more to say beyond that.
