Sudan SPLM official receives death threats over adultery bill

April 23, 2009 (WASHINGTON) — The head of the largest opposition blocs in the Sudanese National Assembly came under fire after a stand-off over legislation setting the penalties for adultery.

The debate over draft criminal law has bitterly divided the legislature, partly because the adultery legislation is directly linked to provisions of Shari’a Islamic law.

Yasser Arman, chairman of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) caucus in the parliament, objected to the Shari’a provisions included in the draft law on adultery during a Tuesday session of parliament.

Arman was articulating the position of the SPLM, which believes that Shari’a law should not apply to non-Muslims.

Arman said that “some different societies who may not see adultery as a crime”.

The SPLM official was interrupted by some legislators and sharp exchanges took place with pro-government parliamentarians. He described as those opposed to his views as “an act of terrorizing”.

The head of the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) bloc Ghazi Salah Al-Deen said that adultery is a crime for Muslims and tribal traditions.

“Any political argument put forward by any member or political party we are ready for it” Al-Deen said.

The adultery crime under the new law is punishable by stoning to death for married males or females and 100 lashes for non-married individuals.

Since the parliament debate, pro-government media reports have implied that Arman, who is himself a Muslim, is guilty of apostasy — a crime punishable by death under Sudanese law.

“This now has created a very bad position for Yasser. He is being terrorized right now in Khartoum,” said Ruben Marial Benjamin, a political affairs officer at the of the Government of Southern Sudan Mission, in Washington which is ruled by SPLM.

“His life is being threatened by the hardliners in the NCP,” said Benjamin, referring to the ruling National Congress Party.

Benjamin, who is also Deputy Head of Mission, added that imams in Khartoum are expected to issue a Fatwa against Arman on Friday, broadcast on the official television.

Under Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) signed in 2005 between NCP and SPLM Islamic Shari’a law is to remain applicable in the North and parts of the constitution are to be rewritten so that Shari’a does not apply to any non-Muslims throughout the Sudan

For those who fear death, rise their voice high not, and those who don’t fear death for the sake of their people always stand bold and admen. Sheri al aw, as stipulated in the CPA, should apply only to Muslim excluding non Muslim Sudanese and in Khartoum not any where else. If the NCP wanted to breach the CPA, they have to be apparent then meandering here and there. Yasser, maintain your stand, and for those who feel duty bounded not money bounded in the SPLM shall stand with you.

Shari’a law imposition is revealing the new dawn of war, something the muslem extremists like Ghazi salah Al-Deen and his brothers[MUJAHIDIN] never calculate well.
When CPA was reached,old-sudan was expected to drop the arrogant Islamic attitudes and adapt a new political culture that embeds all the parameters striking the cross-cultural balance and for sure it must work this way if the new sudan of equality is to be true otherwise splitting up the country is inevitable given the existance of shari’a alongside the sudan interim constitution.
The choice is clear but I wonder who survives without who, north without south or south without north…………..

First of all I’m not in shock. The things that happend in Sudan in the last 100 years, tells the story.
1-There are No Arabs anywhere in Africa including Egypt, Libya, and the Sudan. What we have in Africa are BASTERDs, offsprings, of the ARAB slave master that rapped our mothers, and daughters since 740 AD (we know the baqt pactum).
2-This BASTERDs we have in Sudan, are not like the ones in Ethiopia, Somalia, or any other BASTERDs out there, they rejected thier African origins, and Said we are ARABS, guess What (The Sudanese ARABS are EQUALLY Discriped as NEGROUS, or BLACKS by both ARABS(REAL ARABS)and WHITE people.(Sudan was denied membership in the ARAB Leauge)
3-The Real Arabs themselve have nothing to tell Me:(When the Arabs in the decert where KILLING thier New born DAUTHERS, WE in the Land of CUSH Had RULING QUEENS). So what did they say.
4-The most important thing for the AFRICAN PEOPLE is to Know that the MISSION, and the vision that broutht the ARABS to AFRICA was to Create this SLAVE ARMY to DO the DIRTY work for them (HOW did you think SALAH EL DEEN EL AUOBI won His Wars? That’s why our struggle WILL NEVER be over until this people be PUT in thier place ( They thought they were pleasing thier god by thier BLOODY CAMPAING againest the Innocent ONES OF AFRICA.
But now we RAISE, and we are STANDING UP RIGHT, I’m Talking about the NEW GENERATION, ME, MY CHILDREN, and MY BROTHERS, weather, An AFRICAN, or A BASTARD.
5-When You stand up right, and you speak on behalve of the weak you will find Oppisition from the ENMY that coveted the land of our FATHERS, GIVEN to the BY THE FATHER OF CREATION. and
WE ARE GOING TO GET WAHT’S RIGHTFULLY OURS EVEN IN FRONT OF GOD. ITS OUR DUTY TO RESTORE THE FATHERS, OR WE ARE NOT WORTHY.
SO ITS ON, AND WILL KEEP GOING ON, BUT i KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT.

The “stiff-necks” of the NCP and the so called “Ullama” (sorry i meant) “idiots”, should know that Yasser Arman is a voice of the people and any attempts to harm or silence him will only reinforce the general sentiment of the people which clearly states that some hard-liners within the NCP are not serious about implementing the CPA.

And yet some mis-informed southern politricks talk of “making unity of Sudan attractive”

    Chao!
