Israel, Germany join hands to Ethiopia to develop agriculture

June 17, 2009 (ADDIS ABABA) – A tripartite agricultural project has been launched today in the Ethiopian capital aiming at improving capacity of local farmers toward adopting possible climatic changes.

Supported by Germany and Israel, the 1.5 million Euro Pilot project will be implemented in the Amhara, Tigray, Oromia, and South Ethiopia Peoples’ States. The project will complement efforts engaged by the Ethiopian government toward ensuring food security and self-sufficiency.

The three countries have been working on the project over the past few months said Agriculture and Rural Development State Minister Beshir Abdullah during the launch ceremony held at the Israeli embassy in Addis Ababa.

The project has three main components: promotion of sustainable water resource management, improving irrigation productivity, and utilization of non-potable water resource.

To implement this tripartite project, Israel said it as the know-how and technology in the sector while Germany agreed to provide capacity building training to beneficiaries.

Oded Ben-Haim, the Israeli ambassador praised the project saying his country is pleased work with Ethiopia in the area of food security and climate change.

German Ambassador to Ethiopia, Claas Dieter Knoop said the project provides good opportunity to enhance multilateral cooperation among the three countries in the future.

The project is expected to benefit close to 1,000 farmers, according to the parties of the tripartite project.
