Sudan annual inflation dips slightly to 44.50% in May
June 18, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s annual inflation rate fell slightly to 44.50% in May from 45.84% in April, according to data released on Thursday by the Central Bureau of Statistics.
Prices of essential goods and services in Sudan continue to rise significantly, driven by a weakening local currency, which has worsened living conditions for citizens.
The statistical agency said in a statement seen by Sudan Tribune that the annual rate of change means the general price level in May 2026 rose by 44.50% compared to the same month last year.
The general consumer price index reached 661,686.03 points in May, up from 636,423.53 points in April, representing a 3.97% monthly change.
Food and beverage prices rose 5.53% month-on-month, with the group’s consumer price index reaching 276,424.83 points in May, up from 261,943.52 points in April.
The consumer price index for all goods and services stood at 661,686.03 points in May, compared to 457,899.19 points in May 2025.
The statistics bureau notes that the annual inflation rate measures the change in the general price level between the current month and the same month of the previous year.
The annual inflation rate for the food and beverage sector reached 49.81% in May, reflecting a sharp increase compared to the same period last year.
In urban areas, the annual inflation rate was 41.11% in May, with the consumer price index at 493,576.13 points, up from 349,771.16 points in May 2025.
Rural areas experienced a higher annual inflation rate of 46.83%, with the index reaching 841,968.78 points in May, up from 573,438.25 points a year earlier.
The data indicate that inflationary pressures persist in the Sudanese economy despite the minor decline in the annual rate, driven by the ongoing rise in the cost of basic commodities.
The Central Bureau of Statistics tracks inflation using a basket of 663 goods across 12 categories, reflecting urban and rural consumption patterns, with food, beverages, housing, and transport leading.
