Now SPLM is speaking the right language

By Nhial Bol

July 8, 2009 — During a live television programme last Saturday, the former government spokesman Dr Samson Kwaje defended the SPLM vision and its commitment to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

He admitted that there are obstacles facing the CPA because the National Congress party is not committed to the agreement’s implementation.

When asked if the SPLM will opt for unilateral declaration of independence, Dr Samson Kwaje said the SPLM will follow the CPA without renegotiations. However, he concluded that the issue of UDI will be the duty of Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly if the issues get worse.

Unilateral Declaration of Independence is only possible if the NCP pushes the South; the SSLA has the mandate of declaring unilateral Independence because it represents the people of the South Sudan’’.

If I understood Dr Samson well, I may be the first person to realize that there is a shift of language in the SPLM leadership. SPLM leaders have been keeping a low profile on the issue of UDI, but since Samson admitted publicly that SSLA has a moral obligation to declare UDI, we must take him seriously and very seriously because all other attempts may not lead us to the independence of South Sudan.

Our agenda is independence and we want SSLA to declare on Heroes and Martyrs Day this month, July 30, the day we lost our father Dr John Garang, our independence.

The idea of waiting for elections in 2010 and referendum in 2011 is a waste of time and a waste of resources. Since there is a change of language and change of understanding, the possibility of UDI should be made attractive to the people of South Sudan.

The aim of this article is to urge the SS:LA to gather courage and declare unilateral independence of South Sudan. If the MPs of the SSLA allow this chance to pass without UDI, they will go into the dustbin of our history. We will not forgive and history will punish them.

Having said these few words, I want to encourage Dr Samson and the SPLM to put their interests aside in a move to support UDI for the people of South Sudan.

Since the North is not interested in the democratic solution of elections and referendum, SPLM should rally behind the idea of UDI. Our army will defend it if the North resists it.

Dr Samson, now you are speaking the right language and your statement has gone into history. Our people have develop mixed ideas about SPLM because of its policies. It is high time for Dr Samson to inform the Northern spoilers who are in the SPLM that the attractive option for Southerners is UDI.

I read an extract of Salva Kiir’s speech in Kadugli where he said that the SPLM’s priority is for unity and that the GoNU should carry out developmental projects in the south so as to make the unity of Sudan attractive.

Now I am hearing here that Dr.Kwaje is entertaining the idea of a unilateral declaration of the Independance of South Sudan by the SSLA should the NCP continue to dishonour the CPA.

It seems that SPLM is speaking in different tongues and it will remain to be seen what they actually mean to convey to the masses.

Anyway Mr. Nhial Bol I hope your statement don’t launge you into troubles with the SPLM unionists. I would have wanted to ask HE Salva Kiir about what he makes of Dr. Kwaje’s statement that has been reported by you here but unfortunately Kiir has cancelled his visit to the UK.

Let us wait for the 30th July, may be your forecasts can become realities.

To be truth and have clear vision of yourself believe in Equatorians. Trust what they said not fooling yourself to the side of demon junglese who are visionless and having no clear imagination of what they want in future. No body want unity in Sudan only those who are addciated to evil spirit of arabs, particular the dinkas who are used to that worse treatment are the only ones crying for unity. Kiir himself has a big desire of unity but revealing it to Southerners. HE Slave Kiir prove it when he was in the northern states of south to play his baby politics.

    Dear Mr. Nhial Bol,

    1. Unilateral Declaration of Independenc (UDI) by Appointed SSLA will send a weak message to NIF and its Arab and Islamic Sectarian Northern Parties.

    2. UDI will be a breach of CPA by SSLA and international community may not promptly support it and therefore, unnecessary blood will be sheded for that.

    3. Why UDI now after nearly five years with NIF dragging down CPA?

    4. 2010 and 2011 are just at our backyards and not that far as you imagined.

    5. UDI is possiblly popular if the NIF opt War over accepting Hague based Arbitary Court ruling on Abyei should that ruling favour Abyei belonging to the South.

    6. UDI will also be supported internationally if NIF declare its official or non-official position that they will not go ahead with right South Sudan right for Self-Determination. And that will be a clear breach of the CPA by NIF and its allies. Non-official declaration is if the NIF try in anyway to push the referendum date from its scheduled date and time even for a month, that is declaration not only for delayment of referendum, but also a declaration of war against CPA. In that situation, SSLA have right to UDI.

    7. I do not hate freedom and independence, but I love getting that through public referendum since SPLM mistakenly accepted 6 years period. SPLM would have done better than that to have referendum happen in 2 year time.

    8. NIF and its allies will get a strong message if an elected Parliament declare UDI, or if the people of Southern Sudan decided to go for independence through popular referendum in less than 18 months time from now.

    9. SPLM must fight even more popular war internationally with Northern sectarian oppressors by fiting a responsibility of that war on Opressors necks.
