Sudanese opposition welcomes anti-government university students election victory

KHARTOUM, April 11, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — The opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has welcomed the victory which was achieved by the Democratic Alliance students who are opposed to the regime of ruling “National Islamic Front” in the elections of the Khartoum University Students’ Union for the second time running, the NAD radio said.

The official spokesman of the NDA, Hatim al-Sir Ali, said he conveyed NDA’s welcome and salutations of the chairman of the NDA, Mohamed Osman al-Mirghani, for the wonderful victory. He added the victory was considered a victory for all democrats and those looking forward for a democratic Sudan.

The Democratic Alliance comprises students from Democratic Unionist Party, Ummah Party, Democratic Front, National African Front, Truth Movement, Bath Party and the independents.

He underlined “this victory would make the plans of the regime fail”. He said their plans are aimed at making barren the students’ movement and its organization and them lose their significance so that they can become mere arms for serving its undemocratic trends.

The NDA appreciated the stands of the previous committee of the Khartoum University Student’s Union. He commended their performance in both the students’ and national domains.

He called for more coordination and cooperation between the students’ democratic forces in all universities and higher institutions of learning so as to make them play a greater role in this sensitive period which Sudan is going through.
