Several reports said last week that US president Barack Obama had made a decision to slap sanctions on officials from Zimbabwe, Sudan and Kenya during the UN General Assembly meetings.

An unidentified Sudanese presidential official speaking to the London based Al-Hayat newspaper said that the sanctions “send mixed signals on the US policy towards African nations.”

“The U.S. Government has not imposed additional travel restrictions on Sudanese political leaders, said a press statement released in Khartoum by the US embassy.

“It appears that there has been some confusion in the media concerning travel bans that may be imposed on officials of other nationalities, the embassy further said.

The statement alluding to remarks by the US ambassador to Kenya who has had said last week that his government would impose a travel ban on Kenyan ministers and other prominent people blocking government reforms aimed at preventing political violence.

Sudanese visa applicants are subject to standard clearance procedures which the US Government pursues for applicants of all nations, as well as procedures that apply to applicants of all nations designated as sponsors of terrorism.

These procedures have been in place for some time, and there have been no additional restrictions.

The US has imposed travel bans on seven Sudanese individuals during the Bush administration including political and military officials, militia leaders and rebels.
