UN airdrops food into affected areas in South Sudan

November 5, 2009 (JUBA) – The UN food agency has begun air drops of food assistance to feed 155,600 people in the most inaccessible parts of Southern Sudan. The affected population had been cut off from aid due to the rainy season and security conditions.

These are the first airdrops by World Food Programme (WFP) into Southern Sudan since 2007. Trained teams will collect the food from the drop zone and distribute it.

The airdrops, which began last Thursday, will continue for two-and-a-half months and will provide 4,000 metric tons of food to three of Southern Sudan’s 10 states – Jonglei, Upper Nile and Warrap.

“We can’t wait for food prices to drop or the roads to be passable again. We need to save people from hunger. Airdrops are the only way for us to reach them,” said WFP Sudan Country Director Amer Daoudi. T

Southern Sudan covers 650,000 square kilometres yet the region only has 5,500 kilometres of main roads and only 50 km of those are covered in tarmac. Many roads are in bad condition and cannot be used during the April to December rainy season. Increased tribal fighting has also blocked road and river access to some areas.

The airdrops complement airlifts from June to September of 820 metric tons of WFP food which helped to feed some 40,000 people displaced by conflict in Akobo, a county in Jonglei State.

“The need is so immense that we need to use all our resources to feed so many people facing food shortages,” said Daoudi. Airlifts will continue to serve selected areas in Jonglei State.

To me, jungle state should never be given any help, let them taste the bitter by starving to hell because they deserve this to happen. Some idiots post their crap that they will open Juba-Bor road, ok if so do it and the road will turn from bad to worse, the road will be planted with IED 35 miles away from Juba Bor road upto 5 miles to Bor and we see who is going to fly up with these IED. WEP is your God otherwise some could dry up with hunger.

Have people of south Sudan had been hunger like now and needed help from UN before 1983? Tow killers. Bolts and hunger and we do not have any solution for one of them. I have doubt.

    Dear logic dog,

We are not food lovers like you people. It would be better if they are going to drop cows instead of sorghum.Dinkas are cattle keepers and we just drink milk.

We get wisdom from the cattle camp and not from eating grasshoppers or ‘koroplubeei’.I am very much sure about that thousands of thousand of people from Dinka community are not going to read these comments concerning rats and grasshoppers because they may vomit.Sorry brothers and sisters.

Cattle keepers are known for their wisdom and that is why Museveni is ruling in Uganda and Kiir In Southern Sudan.

Logic is going to face a fantastic music whether he likes it or not.I really man does not fear,I am going to teach Equatorians a lesson that they will never ever forget.

    Dear Logic dog,

Never ever attempt to mention my name in your useless comments otherwise.I am not as stupid as you and your brothers.

Dear brothers who pretend to be good yet they are not.Bear in mind that constant dripping of water swears a stone.Don,t you understand that? If not, then shame on you.
