Egypt hosting a conference between NCP & SPLM on Sunday

February 20, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – The Egyptian government will be hosting a three-day conference between the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) and Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) in the latest move by Cairo ahead of April elections and the 2011 referendum.

The official Egyptian news agency (MENA) said that the NCP official will be headed by Sudanese presidential assistant Nafie Ali Nafie and SPLM by its secretary General Pagan Amum.

MENA quoted an unidentified Egyptian official as saying that the summit “comes in recognition by Egypt of a common destinies between the two states and historical linkage, present and future, which brings together the two brotherly peoples”.

The official said that the conference will contribute to meet the challenges experienced by the Sudan and strengthen the unity and stability of Darfur to provide security and stability throughout the country.

It is not clear why the Darfur issue has been included on the agenda of the meeting between SPLM and NCP. The Sudanese government today signed in Chad an agreement with the Darfur rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM).

A few weeks ago sources told Sudan Tribune that Cairo has invited the NCP and SPLM for a conference aimed mainly at discussing the “Sudan’s unity and postponement of elections”.

Cairo has been stepping up its efforts for more engagement in Sudanese political issues after losing ground to other regional and international players such as Libya and Qatar. The Egyptian government is particularly concerned about the fate of South Sudan which will decide next year whether it wants to become a separate state.

It was revealed earlier this month that Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak made rare remarks speaking of “peaceful” separation between North and South Sudan. He has reportedly criticized Khartoum for lacking the will to preserve the unity and warning that there are regional powers wanting to fuel conflict in the area which he described as “vital to Egypt”.

Egypt fears the impact of South Sudan independence on the Nile water agreement and the possible reallocation of share with the new state even though legal experts say that the water agreements are still binding to the new state.

There they go again echoing the ugly sound of subotaging the election and referendum. What choice do we have now? Does this mean the end of CPA? Are we going back to war?
Who in the south going to swallow this bitter pills? Pagan?

Those Arabs are running around trying to tell the South that we are friends/brothers, well it is too late right now after all the suffering in the South and Egypt was silent. There is no brotherhood between South Sudan and Egypt. We own river Nile and they must pay for the water. What so called Nile agreement is bullshit.

I think Egypt’s initiative is to deter the separation between the two separate cultures in Sudan for its own interest ie THE NILE WATERS. Second, Mr. Amum should not go to Egypt without any consent from SSLA in Juba

This is a moment of truth that Egypt needs to disclose to the people and the government of South Sudan on her role in causing the destruction of South Sudan since when it came into existence. It is the time their government should apologise to the people of South Sudan on her past treachery and let the people of the fatherland to choose their destiny in 2011. It is not the time to dissolve CPA by postponing the election and the referendum as enshrined in this momentous piece. It is indeed a time to consolidate this important milestone in the history of South Sudan. Her intention to sell the idea of Unity of Sudan to the people of South Sudan should not be listened to. She should be made to understand that the fate of South Sudan is to be decided by the people of South Sudan alone. Pagan should go to them with this message and nothing else. As for Darfur, they have their case with Jallaba that should not be minced with our age long case. After all the people of Darfur are the soldiers of Jallaba. Jallaba and Darfur are one. South Sudan is distinct and different in every aspect with the people of the North in which Darfur is part of.

Any positive movement from Egyptian government should be welcome, if it will serve the interests of all parties involved without anyone losing out anything.

As we said before Arabs are not the enemy of south sudan or africans, but only a few individuals who have damaged the relationships, things can still be fixed if all parties work in a honest way with respect to all sides, if Arbas will respect the rights of southerners and realise their freedom to decide on their futuyre then there is no reasons why Arabs and African should continue to be enemies. But this does not mean we want a untied Sudan, we want a unity on voluntary basis, which means southerners should be respected and allowed to decide through the coming referendum if they want unity or seperation based on the CPA and relations between all sides.
