Inter-Messeriya clashes in Abyei displace over 100 residents in the region

March 31, 2010 (RENK) — Deadly clashes between members of Messeriya pastorals grazing cattle in the area have displaced over one hundred of civilians in the village of Marial Achak, east of Abyei town on Tuesday 30.
The clash which took place at around five o’clock yesterday in the evening is reported to have claimed live of an innocent man and wound more others with one transported to Abyei civil hospital at critical condition. Civilians in the area fled further south of the area in search of safety and security forces are deployed.
But, police sergeant major, Kuol Biong, during an interview with Sudan Tribune in Abyei town, said situation there has been contained but frightened local population which fled to Agok area are yet to return. “Situation has returned to normalcy because we have yesterday deployed more police forces and joint integrated units to contain the tension,” he said. It is under control, he adds.
Kuol Miyen, a local administrative officer said the quarrel which culminated into fight was between two clans belonging to Messeriya tribe grazing in the area not with local population.
“It was a quarrel between two clans of Messeriya members allowed access to water and grazing lands in the area that resulted to fighting in Marial Achak yesterday.”
“The cause of the clash is not yet clear. But what I have been told is that those who returned to this area from southern town of Biemnom, Unity state, after series of clashes with local population and SPLA forces there, do not want to live peacefully with local residents in the area,” he added.
He added that Messeriya, who are settled in the area living peacefully for quite long with local people, told their clan members to adopt the same behaviour but seemed not to have agreed.
According to him, he said chief administration, Deng Arop Kuol, visited the area to request them living in harmony with local people but was surprised to hear this clash between them. Kuol and his deputy Rahama Abdul Raham have planned to pay a second visit to the area tomorrow after a recent meeting there.

These nomadic Arabs donn’t deserves to be allowed into Dinka ngok land in any circumstance. Their minds are still filled with a concept of looting and burning of villages of Dinka ngok with impunity. They must only come with permission from Dinka Ngok, thus they will respect the rules laid by the true owners of the land.
They should build proper relations with Dinka inorder to be still offered excess to Dinkaland pastures and water after independent in a few months time now.
They shouldn’t let themself be used by NCP terrorists to spread terror in Abyei or anywhere else.
NCP will not have powers and legal rights to grant you excess to South Sudan teritory after 9/1/2011.
