US envoy expected in Sudan for talks on post-election arrangements
April 28, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — The US Special envoy to Sudan is expected in Khartoum on Sunday where he will hold talks with the Sudanese officials, during his five day visit, about the post-election arrangements.
Maj. Gen. Scott Gration who is facing criticism in Washington for his failure in Darfur file, seeks to focus his efforts on the CPA implementation particularly the referendum on southern Sudan self-determination.
In an interview with the New York Times, he admitted that the election was flawed. But he said it set the stage for a political transformation of Sudan, which would allow Southerners to decide on their future in January 2011.
Gration, who believes that southern Sudanese will opt for independence, said the US Administration has to provide the necessary resources to help southern Sudan to build its government and economy by July 2011, when independence would take effect.
He also said he will seek to involve the international support to build a viable state in southern Sudan.
He said the US administration “was trying to marshal support from Sudan’s African neighbors, as well as from Europe and even China,” reported the New York Times.
Sudanese officials appreciated the supportive stance of the US envoy during the elections period where he hailed the preparations of the electoral process saying the National Elections Commission has “given me confidence that the elections will start on time and they would be as free and as fair as possible”.
However during the upcoming period Khartoum said it would work hard to persuade southerners to vote for unity; an option that might not be harmony with Gration’s vision for the future of the Sudan.
At the end of his five day visit, the U.S. envoy will head to the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to participate in the international conference for peace in Sudan.

Gration we are watching and monitering any odd development that an external forces may be tempting to exsert into the cpa to jeopardise the only chance left for southern sudanese to decide their own fade. we will not accept any body persuasion come what may. bashir said that he will try,but i don’t think this short time left would a best time for diehard bashir trial for the unity if five years did not cemented the root for unity of sudan.
