Security Council extends UNMIS for another year

April 29, 2010 (NEW YORK) — The United Nations Security Council Thursday extended for another year the mandate of the United Nations mission in Sudan (UNMIS) which is backing up the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

UNMIS.jpgIn a unanimous resolution, the 15-member body decided to extend the UNMIS mandate until 30 April 2011, “with the intention to renew it for further periods as may be required.”

The Council stressed the importance of the “full and expeditious” implementation of all elements of the CPA, which ended over 20 years of war between the National government in Khartoum and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) mainly in southern Sudan where some two million were killed and over four million had been displaced.

The Security Council requested UNMIS to play a lead role in assisting in the preparations for the January 2011 referenda, and urged the international community to provide technical and material assistance to achieve this process.

UNMIS comprises a total of around 10000 troops/police officers and 3900 civilian employees deployed mostly in southern Sudan and Abyei to promote security and economic reconstruction of the semi autonomous region.

The UN Security Council also regretted the “persistent localized conflict and violence” and its effect on civilians, in Southern Sudan, and underscored the importance of UNMIS making full use of its authority and capabilities to provide improved security to affected groups.

On another hand, UN spokesperson Martin Nesirky stated today that UNMIS is investigating a recent incident in the border area of Western Bahr El Ghazal and Southern Darfur states, where there was a significant number of casualties reported.

Martin called on the Sudanese stakeholders in northern and southern parties of the country to cooperate with UNMIS to establish the facts and defuse tensions.

Security Council extends UNMIS for another year
This is the best decision that the UN Security Council has made.
The United Nation Mission In Sudan has help the Sudanese particularly the Southern Sudanese to achieved some key CPA issues, for example the election would not be possible in the South without their logistical support.

Security Council extends UNMIS for another year
    Dear readers,

Good decision for the extension of this mandate by the Security Council toward Sudanese people, in particular the Southern Sudanese communities for the CPA Implementation as it was agreed in Kenya.
I personally appreciate for their work done within the last five of their present in Southern Sudan.
But more improvement will be expected this year.
I wish you all the best and success to the UNMIS and the Security Council for more years in Southern Sudan for developments and supports to our people after referrendum.
Good luck and nice, peaceful time with us in the South Sudan at large.
But take care with our friends!
