Sudan’s image has improved before international community: US diplomat

KHARTOUM, May 3, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — The USA has stressed that its relations with Sudan has improved and that the seriousness of the government in the current negotiations in Naivasha, the signing of the Ndjamena agreement with western Sudan rebels and the issuance of the press act, have improved Sudan’s image before the international community.

The US charge d’ affaires in Khartoum, Gerald Gannucci, at a press conference yesterday said that his country is exerting all that is within its capabilities to have good relations with Sudan. Gannucci said, “we respect Sudan and appreciate its cooperation with us in the war against terror.”

Gannucci added that there are similarities between the two countries such as the two countries’ area. He also expressed Washington’s gratitude for Sudan’s cooperation in the field of humanitarian assistance.

The American diplomat further added that his country has confidence that a peace agreement will be reached and relations normalized. However, he did not say when he expected the agreement to be signed.
