Sudanese president sets up fact-finding committee for Darfur : SUNA

KHARTOUM, May 9, 2004 (SUNA) — President of the Republic Gen. Omer Al-Bashir has issued a republican decree setting up a fact-finding committee on allegations of human rights violations committed by the armed groups in the states of Darfur.

The committee is chaired by former Chief Justice Dafallah Al-Haj Yousif and membership of others.

The decree stipulated that an independent and neutral fact-finding committee is set up on allegations of human rights violations committed by the armed groups in Darfur states.

The committee is chaired by Dafallah Al-Haj Yousif (former chief justice) with the membership of Avocate Ghazi Suleiman, Gen. (Rtd.) (police) Hassan Ahmed Sidik (former police director general), Gen. Al-Sir Mohammed Ahmed (former commander of the Western Command), Dr. Fatma Abdul-Mahmoud (National Assembly member), Hamadto Mukhtar (Chairman of the National Assembly’s Human Rights Committee), Nazir Mohammed Sarour Mohammed Ramli (representative of the native administration), representative of the Bar Association and Fuad Eid (former administrator).

The committee shall collect facts and information on allegations of human rights violations by the armed groups in Darfur states, find facts on all claims against the armed groups in Darfur states and the damages that may resulted from them, know the reasons that led to the violations and damages if verified and submit regular regular reports to the President of the Republic on the outcome of its work.
