Unity State governor appoints seven members of referendum coordinating committee
By Bonifacio Taban Kuich
October 7, 2010 (BENTIU) – The Unity State governor, Lieutenant General Taban Deng Gai, on 6 October appointed seven members of the state referendum and post referendum coordinating committee.
South Sudan is due to vote in January 2011 on whether it wants to remain united with the north or form its own independent country.
Commissioner Gai said that the appointees role is to liaise with other sub committees to ensure that the state is adequately prepared to manage all referendum activities.
The seven members will also communicate with outreach teams carrying out consultations with stakeholders .
The members of the state referendum Committees include:
- William Daud Riek, Deputy Unity State Governor, Chairperson of the Referendum Coordination Committees
- Gideon Gatpan Thaor, State Minister of Information and Communication, Secretary of Referendum Coordination Committees
- Thomas Jal Thomas, State Minister of Finance, Trade and Industry
- Joseph Arop Malual, State Minister of Labour, Public Services and Human Resource Development
- Stephen Pei Belieu, State Minister of Parliamentary affairs
- Them Machar Kuol, State Minister of Education Science and Technology
- Deborah Kur Mayiel, State Minister of Health
The commissioner said that he thinks the committee will offer a free and fair representation of those advocating for separation of southern Sudan from the north and those who favor unity.
It is widely believed that the south will vote for independence although preparation for the referendum is well behind schedule.
With just over a 100 days to go; voter registration has not started; the legal status of southerners remaining in the north (and northerners in the south) has not been agreed; the border has not been demarcated; and a new agreement on how to divide the countries resources (oil) has not been signed.

Unity State governor appointed seven members of referendum coordinating committee
Dear readers,
Though I appreciated the nomination of the referendum committee by the Governor, I would have admired Mr. Governor to have nominated fresh faces to the Unity State government, particularly well educated youths with two to three old folks. This is my take because I considerd that youth across south Sudan have shown determinations in every step of the way toward this referendum. They need to be given some sort of political powers during referendum not bystanders as it seems in the Unity state referendum committee nomination. J. Nyol

thank you MR.Governor for your nomination of this so call referandum coodinating committee. However, I as the citizen of the Unity state cast adoubt on this committee . I fear as if they are going to sell our votes for separation to be unity. Because of all these ministers are to much loyal to you .
unless you assure and bow to your belove country South Sudan to be absulotely fair and precise.
Not like Aprill 2010 elections which brought the disaster to our state Unity and as whole as South Sudan.
