Unity state referendum officials report 85% voter turnout

January 15, 2011 (BENTIU) – The referendum officials in Unity state 85 percent of registered voters have cast their ballot in the state for South Sudan’s referendum on independence.
According to James Gatkoi, head of operations for Unity state’s High Referendum Committee in Unity State this was achieved despite some polling officers not receiving their salaries.
Gatkoi said there had not been any incidents of insecurity during voting and that voting was free, fair and transparent. Voting ended on January 15. He added that Unity’s nine counties were using satellite phones to communicate with polling centers to report the results.
Unity state registered the most voters for the referendum with around half a million potential voters. Some people slept at polling centers in order to cast their vote, while others queued from 4:00AM until 5:00PM to cast the their vote.
For the plebiscite on self determination to be valid a turnout of 60% +1 according to the referendum law passed by Sudan’s parliament. The commission running the referendum announced earlier this week that the quorum of over 60% had already been achieved.
Initial results from other states in southern Sudan show a huge turnout with Eastern Equatoria and Warrap states among those reporting a turnout of over 90%.
The referendum is the culmination of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement
signed in 2005 in Kenya, former rebels the Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) and the Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP).
It is widely expected that the south will chose to separate from the north.

The other 15% that didn’t turn up to vote in Unity State must be Riak’s tribe and his blind followers. I heard they sold their ballot papers to Jalaba a deal that Riak himself orchestrated. Riak says one thing and does other. Typical traior.

No one is being tribal here, the truth is being told and it hurts. In fact Riak is the most tribal “leader” out there. Just look at his record down the track and u should see if u are not blind. Remember the 1991Bor massaccre?, it was him who organised his tribe to oust Garang by kiling innocent civilians in Bor. And right now he wants the Presidency seat badly so that he can rule with iron fist and pass the SPLM leadership down his Arab poison blood line!!!!!!!. There is no way we should let Riak commit another atrocities down the track. Riak should stand trial at the ICC as his actions meet all the criteria.

probably think Riak has changed, he is only Dormant, he can erupt at any moment. Riak’s atrocities have to be exposed at some point once we are independent. He probably think he has got away with massacre but he will face trial sooner or latter. Justice and peace have to happen. Doesn’t matter which comes first, both are important and that’s why you see the Security council not defering Beshir’s indictment. No one will forget or forgive Riak for his careless miscalculations in 1991 till early 2000’s when he came back to our SPLM.

I can’t believe in this wreckless analysis being reported in Unity State. That 85% who voted for secession most of them are from Dinka Ruweng Community of Biemnom and Dinka Panaruu Community of Panrieng County plus others Nuer. When I had called to Ruweng Biemnom, no single one has vote for Unity. The same thing to Panaruu too. So, that 15% of the people in Unity State are all Nuer. I do have confident to myself that Dinka Ruweng Community of Biemnom County and Dinka Panaruu can not attempt to vote for Unity since their lands were the first to hit the disaster from Arabs.
This 15% is absolutely from Nuer Community because most of the people from Nuer were under the reign of Khartoum Government. Anyway, it is still okay to have that 85% in Unity State although that 15% of Nuer were been converted or were been indoctrinated by Arabs to vote for Unity. That 15% is nothing and it can not harms Unity State or take the whole Unity State Citizens to Khartoum. We can simply associate that 15% with those of Nuer Generals who rebel and join the Khartoum Government in the past. Thanks to Almight God that no one from Dinka Ruweng Community of Biemnom had vote for Unity. I loves Ruweng which is my first Identity and I’m proud of it.
