Western Equatoria governor encourages girls to excel in education

January 27, 2011 (JUBA) – The governor of Western Equatoria State (WES), Joseph Bangasi Bakosoro, has encouraged the girls in his state to prioritise in education.
Addressing female students at Yambio Cultural Centre on Wednesday, Bakosoro urged them to clearly spell out the challenges they are facing so that the state government will be in a position to help them in the field of education.
Bakosoro said, “educating a woman is simply educating a nation”, he further encouraged the girls to remain at school, saying that learning has got no end, it is a continuous process.
The Governor also warned the school girls against engaging in practises such as going to bars, drinking alcohol and prostitution, “you cannot make money by selling your selves for sex and forget school. You school girls should struggle to have bright future in the new Republic of South Sudan.”
Bakosoro, an ex-footballer, encouraged female students to participate in sports outside their studies. Studies which he felt they should excel in, as some of them are very intelligent, but their environment was not conducive to academia.
He went on to caution the female students to stay away from riots in schools, but encouraged peaceful and genuine demonstrations.
Angeline Daniel, a student from Comboni Secondary School disclosed that the challenges faced by young females include forced marriage and lack parental care.
Kitibe Lucy, a representative of Yabongo Secondary School said some young females, after completion of O Level qualifications, lack the scholarships necessary to further their studies.
She added that most schools lack skilled teachers and called upon the state government to provide teacher training to achieve quality education in the state.
Lucy called upon the State Ministry of Education to establish a boarding school for girls in the state, which would reduce the domestic works forced upon girls when they return from school.
Meanwhile the director general of the State Ministry of Education, Nama Bullen Basir expressed appreciation for the governor’s initiative.
Nama disclosed that the state Ministry of Education has prioritised the long-term training of teachers this year that will deliver quality education in the state and they plan to build boarding schools for boys and girls in the counties of Yambio, Tambura, Maridi and Mundri.
She condemned the practise of sending children overseas for their education because they adopt foreign cultures.
The State Minister of Education Adel Senderi said that it is the interest of the ministry for all girls to complete their studies and that there are plans to save Information Communication Technology programmes in some secondary schools.

Ladies or girls who are in school need encouragement and support from the leaders, elders and parents.
The school board have to form what we called [ P.T.A],Parent Teachers Association,this will help us to find out the obstacles and the solutions to reduce the problems affect the school girls.

Congratulation to Bakasoro administration, this is what actually we want our state Governors to take into consideration. school going children need special care by their parents or guardians, in order for them to get emotional motivation.
One thing you should put forward into forum is that, some laws to govern the education of girls in South Sudan. Our parents are defending on the girls as their source of income due to our financial instability, forgetting that once the girl studied to good level she will contribute more than the dowry.
Last year a young school girl was forced to marry a rich man by her parents in Bahr el gazel region till the girl made suicide and die,and upto now government does’t intervene in the case. This give courage to some parents who have the same negative thinking to the parents of the deceased.
