Unity state: New commissioner of Mayiandit County releases 12 prisoners

By Bonifacio Taban Kuich

March 18, 2011 (BENTIU) – The newly appointed commissioner for Mayiandit County, Simon Gadit Jiek, has set free 12 prisoners from Rubkuay district on his first visit to the county.

Jiek who was appointed as a commissioner by the state governor Taban Deng Gai on the March 7 in Bentiu town was welcomed by hundreds of civilian on his first visit.

Before his appointment, Jiek had worked as an advisor for peace and development in the Unity state government.

Jiek told Sudan Tribune on Thursday that he had freed the 12 men as they had not been found guilty of any crime. He added that they should never have been jailed.

He said punishments should only be given to those who disobey the rule of law adding that he would ensure that murderers, cattle raiding and theft would be strongly dealt with.

Cattle rustling is a major problem in South Sudan, which will become independent in July following a referendum earlier this year.

At the event to welcome the new commissioner, Jiek said that his priorities were to bring peace and development to the area. He urged the community to leave behind tribalism and violence.

Jiek asked young men and women to fully participate in the development of county by creating jobs and not being idle. He added that Mayiandit County was ideal for agriculture and said that young people should invest in this field and improve their farming skills to be more productive.

Mayiandit County is, after Payinjiar County, the second poorest county in Unity state, in terms of development and infrastructure. Jiek said that he is hopeful that Mayiandit will be able to catch up with others counties in Unity state.

Look at this poor new commissioner releasing thugs to go and distabilise civilians. Idiot new commissioner “Simon Gadit Jiek” has made his first greatest blunder as a commissioner of Mayiandit County. May Devil Ngundeng protects his vulnerable people.

Dear journalist mr. Taban Kuich and the likes, we always appreciate your update about our state development and progress, but please allow me to asked you before i comment on commissioner freeing prisoners, please would you tell us which county between Mayandit and Panyijiar you term as the second poorest county? so whether its Mayandit or Panyijiar i think its out of journalists profession ans as well as unethical because it seem as if inciting the communities to take action against the government that doe not develop their county otherwise mean your live please. on the decision made by the commissioner, i think its not problem provided that are prove in court of law not to be guilty otherwise it’s law that set some one free not individual regardless of position in the nation. remember we are all equal before the law, that mean its not Gatdit that free them Innocent but the law being implement by commissioner

    thanks
