Bona Malwal: Tribal politics will divide independent South Sudan

June 23, 2011 (JUBA) – As South Sudan prepares to become a new nation in a few weeks, a veteran southern opposition politician has warned the current leadership over tribal politics, saying Africa’s new nation is likely to be divided along tribal lines.

Bona_Malwal1-2.jpgIn a statement issued to announce his retirement from active politics, Bona Malwal, a former advisor to Sudanese president, Omar Hassan Al-Bashir, advised the Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement (SPLM) to adopt a special programme for “national unity” in order to appropriately address grievances within the South.

“At present, South Sudanese, even the very well educated amongst them, look at one another as members of their many tribes, not of one nation. This is an attitude that can only change through a deliberate and conscious programme of fairness and equity amongst our people,” reads Malwal’s June 21 statement.

He adds, “Only a fair and just government can achieve that for the people of South Sudan. Without such a fair, just and equitable government, I fear that South Sudan could end up as a very divided new state, fragmented into the number of the many tribes we now have.”

The South is due to become independent after its population overwhelmingly chose separation during the January self-determination referendum. The vote was a key prerequisite of Sudan’s 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA); the accord which ended over two decades of war between North and South.

Ordinary citizens in the south, the veteran politician said, too suffered from the adverse effects of the long civil war in the country, and that the current situation provides an opportunity for them to enjoy peace, better public services, and resources, and the rule of law.

Specifically, Malwal cites quality education, better health care facilities, clean drinking water and accelerated development; rule of law, human rights protection and all forms of freedoms as some of the services that have for long eluded the southern people, even after long years of struggles.

Meanwhile, the veteran politician further emphasised the importance of the maintaining good relations between South Sudan and its neighboring nations after the former has attained its independence.

The South, he urged, should improve its worsening relations with the North of the country, given the two regions are bound to share a larger border, which reportedly extends up to more than 2,200 kilometers long.

“Only mutual respect and the preservation of mutual interest can police such borders between the new state of South Sudan and Northern Sudan. Nothing else can successfully police such long borders between the South and the North,” Malwal’s statement further reads.

Malwal also lauded president Al-Bashir for having recognized and fully respected the outcome of the south’s self-determination referendum, saying his commitment to southern independence cannot be doubted.

“As someone who has spent the last seven years watching President Al Bashir agonising through the process of the implementation of the CPA, I commend his wisdom, fortitude, perseverance and statesmanship and applaud him and thank him for this,” the veteran politician said.

    Millions of Thanks.

Dear, uncle is good that U have retired from politics and be advisor and live in the ROSS.
My father and all your collegues will be very happy to see doing that in reality wish U long stay with their children.

Uncle, I think God accept our indpendent and peace together.
Talk to Dr. Lam Akol to do the same as U people are of high calyber non of our current leaders can be compare with u.

Uncle do not be an enemy within, as we are still young Country and one minded or one system politic, dictatorship government but orally, more democratic country than the USA,UK and any other country in the world, where its citizens enjoy a monthly contribution from the Government.

The big issue is corruption which has proof to be difficult, to be handle by us and mostly 98% by us Dinka that is why every tribe cry in the name of Dinka, but what to do if the boss thinks he have every right to let his people enjoy since it is his Traditional right to do so.

But most of them will regret to the rest of their life even their children will never be safe before the eyes of our dead brothers, who can be happy to see their children suffering, while the children of all dogs during the War, and those who were known, are now the rightful owners of the lands money God will give them bad life in the eyes of all sudanese to be seen after independent ,mark my words.

The way our country is being governed will and is the source of all our problems, why is it that, our president is doing things the way he think is best, because are his relative? was the war fought that way? why did they run out side the country during the war? Shame on him and he will be held accountable one day.

You are right Mr Bona Malwal, as the Dinkas continue to day dream that the SPLM is theirs only then other marginalized tribes will soon think of away to create and form their own parties to protect their own interests too.

GOSS + Dinka – Other tribes = a failed, corrupt and disintegrated South Sudan State.

Today Mr Malwal is coming with a different polical skin. What a lie? This Bona Malwal who was a combination of a brake and engine of a politicl vehicle when paired with Abel Alier in then High Executive Council of Juba who worked to build a tribal dynasty in South Sudan. I highly doubt this man’s statement very much. If you take the then Justin Yaak, Ambrose Ring Thiik, and Bona Malwal nothing other than destruction of South Sudan is a reflection from them because of their tribal pride. They are still alive in the politics of South Sudan! God save our South Sudan. I sill remember the speech of some of them in early eighties in Official’s Club in Wau.

Although Bona Malual Madut is a cunning political folk and a diehard supporter of Al Bashir, including supporting unity of Sudan recently, South Sudan people shouldn’t doubt the trustworthiness of his current statement.
It is true GOSS is being challenged from a tribal angle not a national angle and that may lead South Sudan into ethnic fragmentation and troubles on ethnic fault lines.
Bona Malual, please just keep quiet in South Sudan politics like some of your colleagues such as Abel Alier and all those political veterans are doing since you have now officially retired from politics.
South Sudan people wish you safe and fruitful retirement.

What a shame to this ugly man called Bullshit Malwal! U’ve prophesied the doom messages. And by the way, if there is a person who is so much having tribal persona in ROSS, it is none other than Bullshit Malwal. He has discriminated the single community called Gogrial by siding with Twic. He even disintegrated Twic for real. So what is he to talk about the affairs of South Sudan. He aught to resign from politics coz there is no vacuum from him to smell the government of ROSS. Don’t u see how he is commending his colleague of murdering government that he has done a lot. What good did Bashir do to deserve such a heartfelt appreciation? Is it becoz he has murdered and displace the innocent people Ngok Dinka or becoz he has bombard the noble people of Bantiu? Shame to this man!

To Bona Malual and his supporters plus South Australia stooge.

It is absolutely non of our business to retire from active politics.Your being adviser to Bashir was a deservice to us.You never contributed anything and you are not welcame. You are so rapacious and only after money. My friend in South Australia, don’t try to tell us that your cow boy prezi has done anything. You know yourselves in Kakuma, when alots of boys were in classes, you were busy robbing people in Ethiopian community and drinking TAG.Now,these thieves are officers in the GOSS and they brought that mentality of stealing and that is why you hear rampant corruption. It is your culture, specifically in Bhar el Ghazelle to steal without shame.so don’t be proud for nothing man.

Omoni and others attacking Bona Malual are the ones who want the south Sudan to dwell on tribal lines.

What is surprising though is, these very same people are the most complaining about the dominant of the GOSS by few tribes and why attack some one telling our government the right to bring us together.
