July 1, 2011 (JUBA) – The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), which has ruled South Sudan for the last six years, has accused Sudan’s federal oil minister
of “betraying” the region by giving its resources to North Sudan ahead of independence.
Early last June, the two sides agreed that the South will pay a usage fee rather than continuing the revenue-sharing deal after separation.
The minister of petroleum in the national government, Lual Achuek Deng, is accused of unilaterally giving 48% of the oil share to North Sudan for the whole month of July contrary to the 2005 peace agreement which ends the share on July 9.
The SPLM Secretary General, Pagan Amum Akech, in a televised statement on the
official South Sudan TV from Addis Ababa said minister Lual Achuek has betrayed
South Sudan and must be held accountable for his action.
Amum said while his team has been negotiating with North Sudan in Addis Ababa,
they have shockingly learnt that the minister has already sold the oil produced
in South Sudan for the month of July and given it to North Sudan.
Currently Amum and his delegation are in the Ethiopian capital to try to reach a
deal on fees the North should continue to receive for usage of its pipelines and
refineries by South Sudan from 9 July.
The SPLM Secretary General said an investigation will soon be launched into this
action by the minister. Achuek could not be reached for comment by the Sudan
Tribune.
Achuek was also criticized last year by South Sudanese for his comments
supporting the unity of Sudan ahead of referendum and instigating
inter-sectional fighting among Dinka Bor community of Twic East county, from
where he hails, in Jonglei state.
He however denied wrong doing on the two issues related to pro-unity and
instigation of inter-sectional fighting in his home county.

First, if this is accurate then there is no way the writer connect this report with the conflict in Twic East county. Also, how did the SPLM sold their 50% of oil revenue about from 100% of the entire oil of the entire Sudan?

Riek Machar and Pualino Matip Nhial gave the whole oil resources to Arabs from 1999 to 2005 when South Sudan was still in a bitter libration war with North Sudan. Riek Machar and Paulino Matip Nhial made ensure that no penny from oil resources should go to South Sudan development effort except to him, Matip Nhial and their cronies only. They also defended oil installations from SPLA attacks with South Sudanese bloods; but what did we do to Riek Machar and Paulino Matip Nhial? South Sudan government instead of punishing them promoted them into second most senior politician and military man respectively. Who knows, Lual Achiek might be thinking of promotion since we are living in a region where wrongdoers are rewarded and right doers suffer.
If this will be the last betrayal of South Sudan then South Sudan future is very bright. Stop corruption first, who knows this money would have gone to other corrupt politicians in the Government of South Sudan if Lual Achiek did not sell it to Arabs.

He holds two degrees from the American universities: an M.A in economics from Iowa state university and PHD in Economics from University of Wisconsin. Lual after completing his PHD, joined World Bank, then the African Development Bank and was later called by the late SPLM chairman, Dr. John Garang de Mabior from America and made him an economic consultant. He participated in the CPA negotiation.
