Rumbek University reopens but only second year classes

August 5, 2011 (JUBA) – The acting vice chancellor Prof. Michael Maker Mangony of Rumbek University has announced that university will open on August 10 but only for second year student of the college of economics and social studies.

Invitations have not been sent to other students as the university is not ready to receive them.

Prof. Maker said that lack of accommodation and classrooms for the 630 new first year students was delaying their courses.

The vice chancellor said that accommodation and halls for the second year students were already prepared but said that his university needed more money from the central government in Juba to fund fuel for a generator and other essential items.

He said that the 630 first year students fell into two categories, those who were from the general national intake and those who had recently returned to South Sudan, which became independent on July 9.

In the run up to and shortly after South Sudan’s self determination referendum in January tens of thousands of South Sudanese have returned from North Sudan, where many were displaced during the civil war.

After South Sudan’s independence many more have returned fearing that they will not be welcome in North Sudan after the 98 percent landslide vote for secession of what was Africa’s largest country.

Just over 370 of Rumbek University’s first year students are returnees.

He further revealed that plans are underway to construct three campuses for the University within Rumbek Town, the capital of Lakes state, and that the main campus will be at Abinajok, some 5 miles South of Rumbek town.

He said that one campus specialising in veterinary training will be constructed at Nyankot, while another, offering training in medical science will be built between Rumbek Secondary School and Riak Door Primary School where a residence for lecturers will also be constructed.

Prof. Maker also said that the lecturers from the Republic of Sudan willing to continue lecturing at Rumbek University will have to comply with the regulations of the Republic of South Sudan.

That is good hear Rumbek University will be reopened. What about Unity Stat(Bentiu)University when is going to be reopened?. This is becuse Kiir and his people does not want any University Naath Nuer land while Naath Nuer were first people to form SPLA. SSLA, SSDF, and all the parties in South Sudan. Kiir and his friends need to answer our question “where is our 2% of oil” ,is it being taken by Garang Boys or what?

Too many public universities that are not self sustaining or without dedicated funds are useless.

Opening of a university in every state at the moment demonstrates GOSS inexperience in management of higher education.

GOSS higher education policy needs complete overhaul if higher education is something we want to be proud of in this new country.

I don’t understand why Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of GOSS can produce such unsustainable higher education policy when it is headed by people who are supposed to be expert in this field.

    Unless indeed.

    To Belle,
University of Rumbek is university of all the people of South Sudan. It has nothing to do with President Kiir. Establishment of those institutions are irrelivant to when the SPLM/A was formed.

I know you are in juba and that is why you unanimously supporting Kiir’s corruption. Also, I know that you think like him as well because two of you are last men in category of learning. but I love Kiir because he was warlord but now the world is changing from that direction to the learning system and Kiir need to resign before it is too late for our country to be caught up with International Business such as Military equipment, education system, health system, scientific equipment, and many others.
