Juba ready to help strike-affected students at Makerere University, Uganda

By Philip Thon Aleu

September 2, 2011 (KAMPALA) – South Sudan officials in Kampala, Uganda say students affected by the closure of Makerere University on Thursday “will be assisted where necessary.”

Administration closed Makerere University, one of the oldest Ugandan higher education institutions, indefinitely on Thursday, following a two week sit-down strike by teaching and non-teaching staff.

There are more than 90 South Sudanese students at the university. Students were ordered to leave the premises after the university council’s attempts to end the strike failed.

Lual Akol Nhial, the South Sudan Education Attaché, told the Sudan Tribune on Friday that students who require facilitation for transport will be helped where possible.

“In such situations, the office [of the South Sudan Mission] will look into the case of students who needs help and they will be assisted where necessary,” Akol said.

According to Akol, there are 94 South Sudanese students at Makerere University, excluding the students who joined in the 2011/2011 and 2011/2012 academic years.

The South Sudanese student spokesperson in Makerere University was not available for comment.

The South Sudan Mission in Kampala is in the process of becoming an embassy following the declaration of South Sudan’s independence in July 2011.

As part of policy to increase funding for South Sudanese universities, the mission has been able to offer students in Uganda less support.

Despite the advent of South Sudan’s independence and the end of the 22 year civil war with North Sudan in 2005, many students still choose to continue their studies in Uganda.

Well, who sent them to study abroad? government or parents themselves, I bit they find their own mean of solving their problem. Do you know what, these students are fond of ignoring our home educational quality, hence they deserted our country, is it good idea for the goverment to continue supporting them or better to make better of what they folishly ignored? I comment the money to be sent should be used for equiping our universities who close for the whole year now or equiping the health centres and funding for this hunger who had strike our new nation rather then paying attention to these sons and daughters of public fund embezzlers, let their corupted fathers pay their ass.BIG NO to supporting the idiots.
