South Sudan calls on journalists to embrace “patriotism”

December 21, 2011 (JUBA)- The Government of South Sudan (GoSS) on Wednesday called on media practitioners to uphold “patriotism” when releasing information to the public.

Alison Manana Magaya, minister of interior, appealed to the media in an interview on Wednesday to provide accurate and well-researched information to avoid agitation.

“What journalists write can speed up development of the country or hinder it, so my appeal to you is to write accurate information with well-researched data,” said Magaya.

The minister also commended the role played by the media in ousting the corrupt in governmental and non-governmental organisations. However, he warned journalists that the use of spurious information can “cause chaos”.

Magaya explained that his ministry plans to achieve multiple objectives including: to build strong and effective structure; formulate required legal framework; deliver efficient service to the people of South Sudan; rise to the professional standard; attain transparency in financial administration and management, especially taking into account the President’s message to fighting corruption and achievement efficiency.

South Sudan has come under international scrutiny after it detained journalists without charge and in inhumane conditions allegedly for involvement in an article defaming a South Sudanese politician.
