South Sudanese People: We can do better Than That!!

By Luk kuth Dak

February 11, 2012 (JUBA) – “ A lie cannot live forever.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I admit that despite the tumultuous security situation in the republic of South Sudan (RSS), I remain cautiously optimistic that at the end of the day, wisdom will prevail and win over greed, and those traitors, who are sleuthing on our people, muddling with the future of our children, and doggedly basking about bleeding our nation to death, will once and for all be swiftly defeated and brought to justice for cannibalizing our people.

To day, there’s a blame game being tossed around about who is actually responsible for all the troubles our country is faced with. Some stubbornly pour all the blame onto the government of the republic. Others point their fingers to the political parties, who are backed by the Islamic regime of tyrant Omer Hassan Ahmed al Basher of the republic of Sudan (RS).

In truth, both sides of the argument are correct to some extent. However, as the former US President, the late John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK) once said: “ One person can make a difference and every person should Try.” He went on to say in his inaugural speech: “ Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.”

It’s therefore self evident that all of us, the citizens of RSS, collectively or individually, have a solemn responsibility and a pivotal role to play in seeing to it that our nation remains secure and peaceful.

Despite being in disagreements with the Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement on many policies, when Pres. Salva Kiir Mayardit was elected, I made myself a promise that I was going to try to get along better with his administration. I took that position, of course, from the stand point that I knew he could use all the support he so desperately needed to lead the youngest nation in the world. Early on, I also realized that leading a new country with very many enemies all over the place, would indeed be a huge undertaking, which requires our utmost support.

Folks, the world around us wonders out loud whether or not the people of the RSS were hungry enough for their freedom and independence. The treacherous actions toward one another calls into doubt the very foundation of what we have fought for our entire life.

It’s time for us to stop going through the motion and start behaving like authentic human beings, who deserve respect.

Finally, we can compromise just about anything and everything in our lives, but when it comes to our country, compromise somewhere else.
