Sudanese angered by film mocking Islam demonstrate outside U.S. embassy in capital

September 12, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – Hundreds of Sudanese protesters infuriated by a film ridiculing the Muslim religion and its prophet Mohammed demonstrated outside the U.S. embassy in the suburbs of the capital Khartoum on Wednesday.

The amateur internet film, “innocence of Muslims”, already prompted angry mobs on Tuesday to demonstrate and attack U.S. diplomatic missions in Egypt and Libya, where the U.S. ambassador in Benghazi consulate was killed along with three other staff members.

The film is being promoted by controversial U.S. pastor Terry Jones who has drawn condemnation in the past for burning copies of the Koran.

A U.S. embassy official in Khartoum told AFP that a group of few hundred people calling themselves the “Sudanese youth” demonstrated outside the embassy on Wednesday and delivered a memorandum demanding an apology for the film and its removal from Youtube.

The anonymous official said that the embassy compound was not touched.

In Egypt, thousands of demonstrators on Tuesday scaled the walls of the U.S. embassy in Cairo and replaced the American flag with an Islamic one over the provocative film.

Similarly, about 50 protesters angered by the film demonstrated outside the U.S. embassy in Tunisia and burned the American flag.

The U.S. has already beefed up security around its embassies worldwide following the death of the ambassador in Libya. U.S. President Barack Obama vowed to bring justice to the killers of U.S. diplomats.

U.S. embassies in at least seven countries including Sudan warned of similar attacks and advised Americans to be vigilant.
