June 14, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – The Khartoum State Teachers’ Committee announced on Sunday a phased strike starting June 17, making the capital the third Sudanese state to face industrial action by educators this month.

The decision follows the expiration of a 48-hour deadline given by the committee to official authorities to respond to a memorandum of demands submitted last Tuesday.

The committee said in a statement that its Sunday meeting concluded that the lack of an official response demonstrated a disregard for teachers’ grievances, prompting the escalation.

Under the declared schedule, teachers will observe a one-day strike on Wednesday, June 17, as part of the initial phase. The second phase will expand to a two-day strike on Monday and Tuesday, June 22 and 23.

The committee plans to reconvene on June 25 to assess the situation and map out further protest measures for the subsequent weeks.

The statement urged all teachers across Khartoum’s localities to adhere to the strike schedule and called on authorities to address the sector’s grievances seriously, warning that punitive measures would only increase tensions.

The Khartoum decision follows similar strikes in eastern and central Sudan.

In Kassala state, the local teachers’ committee extended an ongoing total strike from Sunday until next Thursday over low wages. In Al-Jazirah state, educators also began a phased strike on Sunday, which they plan to escalate into an open-ended general strike by June 28 if their financial and professional demands are not met.
