Lakes State Party Chairperson opposition mounts

November 1, 2012 (RUMBEK) – The chairperson of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in Yirol West County of Lakes state, Agok Manyiel Dhieu, has told the press that he opposes the appointment of Mabor Ater Dhoul by state party chairperson Daniel Awet Akot.

Dhieu called for Dhoul to resign immediately.

On Tuesday Akot held a meeting to resolve the widespread disquiet amongst the state government, caused by his appointment of Dhoul to the post previously held by Samuel Mathiang Keer. I resolution was not achieved. Rather, the Lakes state SPLM assistant secretary for political affairs, Malou Moses Majok, left the meeting saying he had been threatened by Akot.

Dhieu said he rejects Dhuol’s appointment because does he not fully understand the SPLM, as he was overseas during the Sudanese civil war.

The Sudan People’s Liberation Army were rebels which fought for South Sudan against Khartoum until the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Deal in 2005. The political wing of the former rebels now sits in power in Juba as the SPLM.

Dhieu also said Akot had failed to follow the correct procedure in appointing Dhuol’s appointment without consulting the State Liberation Council (SLC).

Dhieu said, “we told comrade Awet yesterday that we do not want this man to governance us – he said he is coming to transform the SPLM party. His mission that he stated is coming to dismiss the Governor and next he will go for stabilization of that state. We tell comrade Awet that we will not recognise the appointment.”

Dhieu explained that “in 2006, you tell us that you are coming for election, referendum and census – we supported you because of that idea – now in this year you are ringing alarm bells”.

He called on Awet to reverse Dhuol’s appointment and allow the decision to be made by the SLC.

In response to recent accusations that he had threatened a meeting to asses Dhuol’s appointment by blocking local roads and posting soldiers in the area, Awet said Dhuol will not assume his post until further notice.

Dhieu charged Dhuol with rejecting the appointment of ministers Pur Chieggan Dakbai and Machuor Marial Wol by governor Chol Tong Mayay in April.

“Mabor has rejected our SPLM ministers in the Assembly – how can he serve in a fair manner since his objected other SPLM members?” asked Dhuol.
