SPLA soldier killed in Rumbek revenge attack
June 13, 2013 (RUMBEK) – A member of South Sudan’s army (SPLA) was shot dead in Cueibet county of Lakes state on Wednesday by a man suspected to have come from Tonj South county of Warrap state.
Authority in Cueibet County acknowledge the incident and called for calm. Isaac Mayom Malek, Cueibet County commissioner said that recent revenge attacks between Cueibet carryout by Tonj South County of Warrap county had increase despite communal peace agreement signed in March.
Mayom said that “it is now third time, pastoralists youth from Tonj South County of Warrap state are carrying out revenge attacks within my county – their revenge records now is standing at three people being killed since March 2013 communal peace agreement which we had signed between Warrap, Rumbek North and Cueibet counties.”
He confirmed that soldier belong to Division six was killed in the house of his in-law on Wednesday by suspected armed men from Tonj South county of Warrap state.
“Monyrun Marol is SPLA soldier belong to Division six who was visiting his family was killed in Cueicok at Manyagok payam earlier in the morning by youth armed from Tonj South county of Warrap state but no indication for those suspected being capture or not” said Mayom.
Lakes state authorities view the attack as violation of peace and reconciliation resolutions adopted during a peace meeting held March 29 – 31.
